Facebook and other forms of
social media have a large influence on today’s society, in the sense that a
large majority of the population use at least one form of social media. This
gives certain companies such as Facebook the power to influence many people
with products that they know people have interest in. They find the genre that
they believe you like the most. For example, if I have previously liked a
specific Facebook page or group, my newsfeed will then begin to be filled up
with suggested pages that are similar to the one that I have liked. This is a
perfect example of how Facebook has the power to push products on people such
as myself by finding a genre that they believe I will be interested in.
In relation to Facebook, the
reading that was assigned for us in week 3, Facebook is meant to be an online
diary that everyone is able to view, but the question is “Can we and should we
read the online diary as another genre?” (Mcneill, 2009) This gives ordinary
people the power to upload their thoughts and feelings to the internet for all
of their friends and family to see. With this power people are able project their
thoughts and influence everyone that is in their friends list. Facebook also
has the power to let you say anything that you want whether it be negative or
positive. Just like in the sense of bullying, people have the accessibility to
say hurtful things that they would not usually say in person.

ReplyDeleteThis blog seems to be very well completed. There were some adequate points about how the power Facebook has (to advertise heavily) when someone "likes" a certain company post on Facebook. I would like to just point out some small pointers that might help. Firstly, if there is ever an instance where this topic crops up again, it might not hurt to possibly find some statistics, based on the work you lay out in your blog. For example, using this exact quote (quoted from lecture 2 of BA1002: 2015, by Dr. V Kuttainen): "“Social networks are websites that connect people virtually. In this day and age, if you aren’t active on social networks, you are in danger of being ‘out of the loop’. Social networks are wonderful tools that can reinforce your brand and allow you to make valuable contacts, share information, and extend your brand’s reach.” (Dan Schawbel 2009 Me 2.0 p.143). Not only would this help your word limit, but could prove rather useful, when trying to find references for another assignment. To add to that however, the reference's used however, should be commended on, as they seem rather appropriate to your blog, and give readers good idea's into the power of Facebook. To conclude this comment, here is an example which i hope is rather helpful for yourself and others, when completing other blogs (if Facebook is chosen as a topic again): there are 1.44 billion users on Facebook in one month, which shows researchers, that Facebook is to big to ignore (https://zephoria.com/top-15-valuable-facebook-statistics/ Accessed 14/08/2015).
